French teacher suspended over pro-Taliban Facebook post
A teacher in France was sacked from his job after he commended the Taliban in a post on social media, French daily Le Figaro reported.
Khalid, a maths teacher in the northeastern town of Nancy, whose full name was withheld, wrote that the Taliban had "the will and the conviction" and "unlimited courage" in a Facebook post.
After the post, the teacher was suspended by the school administration and a screenshot of the post was sent to the prosecutor's office, according to the newspaper.
An investigation would be opened, according to a statement by the prosecutor.
Advocating terrorism online is punishable by a fine of €100,000 ($119,000) and up to seven years in prison under French law.
The Taliban announced on Friday evening that they had completely taken over Afghanistan, since US and other foreign troops withdrew.
Last month, France and other Western states revealed they were talking with the Taliban, following the group's takeover of Kabul, over how to extract foreign citizens and Afghans in danger even after the pullout of international troops.
Analysts have said that a critical question in the next months as the evacuation phase winds up is what kind of relationship Western states will have with the Taliban and if some capitals could contemplate diplomatic ties and intelligence sharing.
