Gaza’s health authorities announced on Thursday that 54 Palestinians- including four whose bodies were recovered- and 831 injured people were brought to hospitals in the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours, amid a sharp rise in starvation and malnutrition in the devastated territory.

According to the authorities, the death toll from Israel’s ongoing assault has reached 61,776, with 154,906 wounded since the start of the war on Gaza on 7 October 2023.

In the latest update on Thursday, israel's deliberate starvation of Gaza has also claimed another four Palestinians.

The newly-announced deaths from starvation come after eight died yesterday, meaning the total number of dead stands at 239 people, including 106 children. The toll comes as Israeli attacks on Gaza on Wednesday killed over 100 people.

The death toll comes amid continued international outrage at the aid situation in Gaza, with 100 aid organisations, led by the Norwegian Refugee Council, calling for "an end to Israel's weaponisation of aid".

In the occupied West Bank, Israel continues to consolidate its creeping annexation of the territory, with far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announcing on Wednesday plans to build 3,000 new homes as part of the E1 settlement project east of occupied East Jerusalem.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces have continued raids, arresting five Palestinians in the occupied city of Qalqiya, according to Palestinian news agency Wafa.

HRW: Israel strike on Iran prison was 'apparent war crime'
1:37 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Human Rights Watch alleged Thursday that an Israeli airstrike on a notorious Iranian prison was “an apparent war crime”, while also accusing Tehran of harming and disappearing prisoners after the attack.

Israel struck Evin Prison in Tehran, one of Iran's most notorious detention facilities for political activists and dissidents, on June 23, during its 12-day war with the Islamic Republic.

The strikes during visiting hours hit Evin Prison’s main southern entrance, another northern entrance and other areas of the complex, destroying buildings that had medical facilities and prison wards.

The Iranian authorities initially said at least 71 people were killed during the airstrike, among them civilians including inmates, visiting relatives, and prison staff. Iranian media later raised that number to 80.

It was unclear why Israel targeted the prison.

Human Rights Watch said the attack was “unlawfully indiscriminate” and that there was no evidence of an advance warning or a military target before striking the prison complex, which it estimates holds over 1,500 prisoners.

“To make matters worse, Israeli forces put at grave risk prisoners who were already victims of Iranian authorities’ brutal repression,” said Michael Page, the rights group’s deputy Middle East director.

Human Rights Watch says prisoners were subject to “ill-treatment and violence” both as they were being taken out of the prison following the attack and as they were returned.

Israel's Smotrich approves E1 settlement
9:00 AM
The New Arab Staff

Bezalel Smotrich approved plans overnight for a settlement that would split East Jerusalem from the occupied West Bank, a move his office said would bury the idea of a Palestinian state.

It was not immediately clear if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu backed the plan to revive the long-frozen E1 scheme, which Palestinians and world powers have said would lop the West Bank in two and will likely draw international ire.

In a statement headlined "Burying the idea of a Palestinian state," Smotrich's spokesperson said the minister would give a press conference later on Thursday about the plan to build 3,401 houses for Israeli settlers between an existing settlement in the West Bank and Jerusalem.

Israel had frozen construction plans there since 2012 because of objections from the United States, European allies and other world powers who considered the project a threat to any future peace deal with the Palestinians.
