Three police officers were among four people killed in a car bomb attack near a police station in eastern Syria on Sunday, according to local reports.

"Three police officers were martyred and two others were injured in an explosion that occurred today near the police station in the city of Al-Mayadeen in the eastern countryside of Deir Az-Zour," state news agency SANA reported.

Syria TV later said that a civilian had also died in the blast, raising the death toll to four.

"At exactly 7:13 pm this evening, an explosion occurred near the Mayadeen police station," a local official told SANA.

"Preliminary investigations and an examination of the site showed it was caused by a car bomb, which resulted in the deaths of three members of the General Security and a number of wounded," they said.

Images and footage shared online appeared to show the wreckage of a police vehicle and a crater in the road.

Security officials have imposed a curfew on the city and are investigating who was involved.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The blast came a day after Syrian security forces killed three Islamic State group militants in a raid in Aleppo.

Four others were arrested and explosives were seized during the operation, which was carried about by the General Security forces and General Intelligence, the interior ministry said on Saturday.

Syria's interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa and his now-defunct Islamist rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham are long-time opponents of the Islamic State group, and fought for control of northern Syria during the civil war.

Western powers have pushed the new government in Damascus to embark on counter-terror operations and crack down on extremist groups.

EU welcomes transitional justice, missing persons commissions

A senior EU diplomat has welcomed the Syrian government's decision this week to set up commissions to probe Assad-era human rights abuses and investigate the disappearance of thousands of people.

"I welcome the formation of the National Commission for Transitional Justice and the National Commission for Missing Persons in Syria," EU Chargé d'Affaires to Syria Michael Ohnmacht wrote on X.

"This is an important step towards addressing critical issues in the path to comprehensive justice," he said.

There have been calls from Syrians for a transitional justice mechanism to be established, as well as more work to find the tens of thousands of Syrians disappeared by the former regime.
