Award-winning Syrian documentary filmmaker Waad Al-Kateab shared a touching photo of her daughter Sama's first day of school, marking the next part of a journey she began in Aleppo during the war.

The documentary For Sama was named after one of Kateab's daughters.

She took to Instagram to share a photograph of her child wearing school uniform in their adopted home in the UK.

"First day at school," she captioned the photo, along with two hearts-eyed emojis.

In a matter of hours the photograph received thousands of likes on the social media platform and many well-wishes, particularly from those familiar with the family's harrowing journey out of Aleppo.

"Sending wishes for all the best," one Instagram user wrote.

"Good luck Sama," another added.

For Sama received several accolades last year including a coveted BAFTA. It follows the story of Kateab's day-to-day life over the course of five years, from the 2011 uprising to life under the city's horrific siege by Bashar Al-Assad's forces.

The documentary takes the form of a letter addressed to her daughter.

Kateab gets married to Hamza - a doctor at one of the few remaining hospitals in Aleppo whose work the film follows - and gives birth to her daughter Sama, whose upbringing amid chaotic warfare is a strand of continuous fear for the new mum.

It earned a record four nominations at the BAFTAs (British Academy of Film and Television Arts), picking up the prize for Best Documentary at the award show earlier this year.

Last year, For Sama won the best documentary award at the Cannes Film Festival and the Documentary Feature Competition's Grand Jury and Audience Awards at the South by Southwest festival.

Kateab, who lives in the UK, was recently praised for a documentary she released earlier this year about the NHS' fight against coronavirus.

Kateab was granted access to film inside an intensive care unit (ICU) in Kent where NHS workers are treating coronavirus patients.

Her documentary was aired in April of this year on Channel 4.
