Alana Hadid celebrates Palestinian heritage at her wedding
At her recent wedding, activist and creative director for Watermelon Pictures, Alana Hadid, chose to showcase Palestinian culture, while her sisters, supermodels Gigi and Bella, served as bridesmaids at the ceremony.
The ceremony was held in the home of Alana's father, real estate developer Mohamed Hadid in Los Angeles on 18 October.
Earlier this year, Alana discussed her Palestinian heritage with The New Arab, telling us, "When you're not allowed to go home, when you've been expelled from your homeland with no right of return, you're forever a refugee. Palestinians carry that with them forever."
Alana made several nods to her heritage in her wedding to her husband Ross Williams, whom she reportedly met on a dating app.
Alana's sisters, Gigi, Bella, and Marielle, and "man of honour", her brother Anwar, walked down the aisle to “Ya Tal3een” by Palestinian artist Dana Salah. The reception also featured a DJ playing "everything from Abba to Arabic music."
The bridal party wore olive green, but it's unclear if this was a reference to Palestine's olive growers. Alana also gave her bridal party Zaytoun Olive Green Keffiyehs by KURVD, suggesting that the choice of colour might be another tribute to Palestine.
The wedding's drinks reception featured an espresso and matcha bar by Mokafe, a Yemeni-Palestinian coffee supplier based in the US. The couple also served Palestina cola.
The bride told British Vogue, "Especially with what’s going on in the world right now and what’s happening in Palestine, it was extremely important to make sure that everyone was keeping in their mind the fact that there are people in the world who are suffering."
Like her sisters, Alana's heritage has inspired her to advocate for Palestinians in the often apolitical world of fashion and entertainment. She is often spotted wearing a keffiyeh at fashion week, and is the creative director of Watermelon Pictures.
